Yesterday was a truly historic day across the UK as temperatures widely soared into the high thirties and to over 40°C for the first time since records began. The old UK temperature record was obliterated as dozens of locations beat the previous record of 37.8°C set in 2019 with both the widespread nature and the intensity of the heat ensuring that July 19th 2022 will go down in the history books.
Unsurprisingly after yesterday's record heat, it's been another warm and sticky night for many regions although somewhat fresher air is now making its way in from the west. There are a few residual showers around this morning, especially towards the north and across the southwest where some locally heavy downpours are moving in, but for most places Wednesday is dawning dry with plenty of sunshine around once again. Cloud will tend to bubble up in many areas today with a scattering of showers breaking out by this afternoon, these turning locally heavy and thundery, especially across parts of central, southern and eastern England although not everywhere will catch one and many places will stay dry. Temperatures today will be well down on yesterday, ranging from 17°C to 22°C in the north. 23°C to 25°C in the west and 27°C to 30°C towards eastern districts of England.
Showers will die out this evening and tonight with many places seeing a dry night with clear spells. It will be a cooler night than of late, with temperatures across parts of the north and west dropping down into single figures in rural spots. Thursday is the set to be a mostly dry and fine day with sunny spells and temperatures back close to or just above the seasonal norm so feeling much cooler compared to the start of the week for many although southern counties of England will still be pretty warm.
