Low pressure will bring a thoroughly wet and miserable day of weather to much of central and northern England today with persistent spells of heavy rain, some of this rain extending up into Scotland too. However, for parts of the south and west it will actually end up as a pretty reasonable day with plenty of sunshine around.
This morning starts off with low pressure close to the coast of East Anglia and during the next 24 hours or so this low will only slowly drift northwards so never too far away from eastern coasts. Outbreaks of rain are wrapped around that low and will affect many parts of central and northern England, north Wales, southern and eastern Scotland throughout the day, the rain heavy and persistent at times, bringing the potential for some locally large totals of rain in excess of 2 inches in places which will result in hazardous travelling conditions and the risk of localised flooding.
It won't be wet and miserable everywhere though with much of western Scotland, Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, west and south Wales, southern and south-western England see plenty of dry and bright weather today although a few showers will affect south-western regions.
It will be rather cold in the wet regions, especially as a keen wind picks up off the North Sea, with temperatures held back in single figures, but brighter parts of the south and west will see maximums of 10°C to 13°C, the highest values coming towards southwest England.
Not a huge amount of change is expected tonight with further periods of rain across many central and northern regions as that low slowly drifts north, but by the end of the night the rain will tend to become confined to Scotland and northeast England. This rain continues to slowly pull away to the north tomorrow to leave many areas with a dry and bright end to the week and just the odd shower as a weak ridge of high pressure tries to build in.
