The area of low pressure that gave many central and northern regions of the UK such a wet and miserable day yesterday is still hanging around close to the northeast today and will bring another very wet day to central and eastern parts of Scotland where over 100mm of rainfall is expected across the hills and mountains.
So a very wet day for much of central and eastern Scotland, that persistent rainfall bringing hazardous travelling conditions and the risk of localised flooding but the heaviest rain should begin to ease later. For much of the rest of Scotland further periods of rain are expected again today with showery outbreaks continuing to affect parts of northern and north-western England although for these areas it will be drier than yesterday was.
Meanwhile, for much of Ireland, Wales, southern England it will be a mostly bright day with some good spells of sunshine and just a few showers, mainly towards the southwest, and these brighter conditions will slowly extend their way into Northern Ireland and parts of the Midlands.
It will be another rather cold day in the wet regions, especially with brisk winds coming in off the North Sea, with temperatures held back in single figures, but brighter parts of the south and west will see maximums of 10°C to 13°C, the highest values once again across southwest England.
Tonight sees outbreaks of rain in the north slowly easing, but some further outbreaks of rain will continue through the night and perhaps return to eastern parts of England during the night. Elsewhere and where skies clear it will turn cold with some frost forming in places. This does mean a cold and bright start to the weekend for many with the showers in the north and east slowly dying out, but as we go through the day the next system pushes into the west bringing more rain with it.
