A pretty wild end to the working week across southernmost counties of England and Wales and particularly through the English Channel where severe west/south-westerly gales are gusting in excess of 70 MPH in exposed spots this morning bringing some damage and disruption. The area of low pressure responsible is slowly filling and moving eastwards so conditions will slowly improve today with the strongest winds gradually easing from the west.
For much of England, Wales, Ireland and Northern Ireland it is a mild start to the day with bands of rain circulating around that low pressure system. These will continue today but the rain will turn more showery across central and southern regions although some of the showers will be heavy at times. Some rain will also continue across Ireland, Wales and southwest England although the far southwest will turn brighter. Meanwhile, for much of central and northern England it will become mainly dry but remain mostly cloudy.
Meanwhile, for much of Scotland it is a brighter but chillier start to the day with some rural frost in places. There is more cloud towards the north and east though, this cloud bringing a few scattered showers, and some of these showers will spread further west during the course of the day.
Temperatures today will be cooler than yesterday thanks to a north-easterly breeze developing, top values ranging from 7°C to 10°C in the north east and 11°C to 13°C elsewhere, but those strong winds in the far south will slowly ease.
The weekend sees pressure starting to rise across the country trying to settle things down, but the legacy of a trailing weather front will bring a fair amount of cloud and some further rain to parts of the west and southwest for the first half of the weekend before drier and cooler conditions take over for most places by Sunday.
