The hottest day of 2024 so far is expected today with temperatures across parts of central and south-eastern England expected to reach maximums of around 34°C. It's not hot everywhere though with thunderstorms across northern Britain bringing fresher air into much of the north and west before these cooler conditions extend further south and east during the next couple of days.
For northern and north-western regions of the country it's a cloudy start to Monday with thunderstorms and heavy bursts of rain making their way north-eastwards bringing some potentially lively weather across parts of Scotland over the next few hours with a risk of frequent lightning, hail, gusty winds to go along with some torrential downpours. These heavy showers and storms will pull away to the east today with brighter skies developing from the west to leave a largely fine and dry afternoon for much of Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland with temperatures in the low-twenties.
Meanwhile, for much of England and Wales it will be an increasingly hot and humid day. Any early showers and thunderstorms will tend to move away to leave many places fine and sunny, however, further cloud will build at times bringing a risk of further scattered thundery showers, and cloud amounts could determine the maximum temperatures but for most places it will become very warm or hot with temperatures into the low-thirties although sea breezes will keep coasts cooler and western districts won't be as warm.
A largely fine and dry night follows but the odd heavy shower or thunderstorm could graze the southeast whilst freshening winds bring some showery rain into Ireland, Northern Ireland and western Scotland. This pushes further east tomorrow but for the far southeast it will remain mostly fine and still very warm although not quite as warm as today.
