Conditions will start to feel increasingly autumnal over the next few days as temperatures tumble with some chilly days and nights on the way, all thanks to a cold front sinking southwards across the country today opening the door for a chilly air mass to move down from the Arctic for the midweek period.
This morning is dawning fairly mild and cloudy in many regions with some patchy rain and drizzle in places, but there is a band of heavier rain currently sinking south across Northern Ireland and southern Scotland, the rain now moving down into northern England. That band of rain will continue to sink south today, weakening as it does so, clearing all but southern regions of Ireland, England and Wales by the end of the afternoon. Much brighter conditions will then follow from the north with plenty of sunny spells but showers will break out towards the north and west, turning heavy at times. However, for the Northern Isles of Scotland it will be a very wet and windy day with gales and driving rain lasting for much of the day. Temperatures will range from a rather cool 10°C to 13°C in the north and 16°C to 19°C further south with brisk winds in the north making it feel cooler still.
What's left of that band of cloud and rain will finally clear southern regions this evening with conditions also slowly improving over the Northern Isles and then it will be a much colder night for many places with clear spells, although showers will feed into northern and western regions exposed to the north-westerly wind. Temperatures will widely drop down into single figures and for those northern areas with some shelter from the wind and showers there could be some ground frost forming. Tomorrow is then shaping up to be a cool, bright and breezy day with sunny spells but also with plenty of showers developing, some of these showers heavy and blustery with a risk of a rumble or two of thunder.
