Tumble Dryer TroughAdded : Tuesday at 13:33 Is it drier or dryer? Anyway, worth a little look at next week in the weather world for todays discussion as at the moment the UK weather is stuck in a little bit of a rut. You can see this by looking at the chart for tomorrow :-
Yep, have seen more interesting tile collections in hardware stores than that chart. It should come as no surprise therefore if you look at tomorrows jet stream :-
You can see the jet stream way to the South of the UK. Normally, one would expect this to mean much colder weather across the UK, after all, we are in polar air right? Well, here is the thing.... It's more a case of last weeks weather patterns with the high pressure pushing around warmer/colder air which is the dominating factor of the weather this week. In fact, if you look at the current 850hpa temperatures :-
It's a bit of an old mess across Western Europe. Back to next week though and this is what happens with the jet stream :-
You don't have to be a genius to know that a jet stream chart like that means that things are on the move and moving they are...
Most of the global models bring a notable trough across the UK during the early part of next week with some pretty chilly air coming in from the Northwest across the North Atlantic from Canada :-
Now, note we said Canada.... That's a long, long way away from the UK. This means that the air becomes heavily modified at the surface by a small pool of water called the Atlantic ocean. Less so at higher levels which is why showers will fall as snow across higher ground and mountains next week.
The GFS ► keeps us in this impressive cold trough for much of next week, this is the chart for next Friday :-
We know this is T+240, but with a feature that large, it's highly likely the GFS ► is handling it well, not to mention the ECMWF ► and GEM go with a similar theme too.
In scenarios like this it's a case of mountain snow, showers of hail, graupel and snow grains for coastal areas and just a bit darn parky for the rest of us.
