Milder Next WeekAdded : Thursday at 13:40 You do have to wonder sometimes whether the weather keeps a diary and seems to have a different plan of action each week. For the past few weeks we've had one which was rather boring and not much going on, this week being an active and colder week and next week? Well, let's take a look.
The first thing worth looking at is the jet stream pattern for today :-
One for the transatlantic pilots out there as some impressive flight times from the USA to Europe no doubt thanks to an active jet stream across the Atlantic, but notice that it's rather flat and also to the South of the UK.
This simply translates our weather as to being cool and mobile, which is pretty much what we have had this week.
Next weeks jet stream pattern is more like this :-
Notice how the jet goes from a flat (or zonal) state to one of more troughs and ridges (meridional is that we call that).
It's a rather slow change over period to be honest, but the GFS ► has been hinting for a while at the Atlantic bringing in some weather systems from the Southwest next week, but also high pressure building across parts of Southern Europe which in turn forces the low pressure systems across Scotland and allows milder air to come in from the Southwest.
Here is the chart for Monday :-
Then into the middle of next week we see the Southwesterlies really starting to take hold across all parts of the UK and Western Europe :-
So, after a boring week, a cold and windy week we finally revert back to the normal weather which one would expect for this time of year next week. Wet, windy and on the mild side.
One thing which is worth keeping an eye on if you live near rivers etc across Scotland and Northwest England next week is the milder air bringing a thaw to the laying snow across higher ground. Couple this snow melt with rain coming in from the Southwest and we could see river levels in these areas rising next week quite quickly due to the combined effect of the two.
