Briefly Turning More ChangeableAdded : Saturday at 14:30 Nothing too out of the ordinary for the end of May, but we are expecting more changeable and cooler conditions to take over during the next few days before the start of June brings signs of high pressure building back in.
Let's start with today's chart:
Nothing too extreme on there, a weak ridge of high pressure extending in across the UK but a frontal system is bringing some rain into the west and northwest.
A look at the freezing level chart shows how many northern latitudes are warming up, as would be expected at this time of year, but there is quite a cold plunge coming out of the Arctic to the north of the UK:
If we follow this cold air mass over the next few days, you can see how it is moderated quickly as it sinks south thanks to the sun approaching its strongest levels:
Nonetheless, cooler air does sink down across Britain and Ireland so temperatures will take a bit of a dip, going from highs in the low twenties today...:
...to the mid-teens by Tuesday, and cooler still over Scotland:
In addition to the cooling theme, there will be more in the way of showers or longer spells of rain around too. Parts of Scotland will be pretty wet on Sunday:
By Monday and Tuesday most of any precipitation will tend to come in the form of showers, but some of these could be quite heavy and contain hail or thunder thanks to that colder air mass interacting with the strong sunshine:
As we head on further into next week so the Azores High starts to show signs of wanting to ridge in, but it may take a few days for it to properly take over with a potentially wet and windy spell developing on Wednesday night into Thursday:
However, by next weekend both the GFS ► model and the ECMWF ► model are in agreement for the Azores High to bring increasing amounts of fine and warm weather to many parts of the country:
The far northwest may remain more changeable though. It's still a week away so time for changes, but we are certainly optimistic that for many regions the start of June holds some promise if warm and sunny weather is your thing.
