Very Mild And Windy TuesdayAdded : Sunday at 14:30 The new working week is almost upon us and the first half of the week will be an increasingly unsettled affair thanks to a deepening Atlantic low which will actually be passing over or close to Iceland:
This will be a very intense system, with a central minimum pressure of around 939mb as it passes close to Iceland. You can see from the chart above the extent of severe gales expected around the southern flank of this system, demonstrated nicely by the forecast wind speed chart:
Some of these very strong winds will affect northern parts of the British Isles, especially the north and west of Scotland where severe gales gusting up to 70-75 MPH are possible during Tuesday afternoon and evening:
It's also likely to become very gusty to the lee of high ground across southeast Scotland and northeast England as the chart above picks up on, so it's worth keeping an eye on the forecasts if you have travel plans for Tuesday afternoon and evening in the north.
Accompanying the wind will be some rain, but the other main feature of Tuesday weather is expected to be temperatures thanks to a very mild air mass sweeping in from the southwest:
Before somewhat colder air moves into the northwest by early Wednesday:
As that mild air mass moves in so temperatures will rise during Tuesday, with values into the teens expected across Ireland and the southwest by lunchtime:
Extending to many areas by the evening, so it really will feel quite balmy if you're out and about on Tuesday evening despite the strong winds:
Even by midnight, many areas are expected to see temperatures still in the low teens:
This means we will be watching for potential records to be broken, namely the highest minimum temperature and the date record. The date record for January 7th is 15.0°C (set in 1934 and 1989) whilst the all-time January record is 18.3°C (this set on three separate occasions: in Aber in 1958 and 1971, and Aboyne in 2003).
