Another Changeable Week In StoreAdded : Sunday at 14:30 Let's start today's discussion off with a look at the jet stream chart for today:
And here's today's corresponding pressure chart:
You can see how flat and strong the jet stream is above our part of the world at the moment and so it's no surprise that there is a deep area of low pressure over Scandinavia - this is the system that moved through last night and is bringing today's strong winds and blustery showers in the north.
Let's look at the jet stream over the coming days:
You can see how the jet stream remains pretty flat and aimed at the UK for much of the week but by next weekend there are signs of it weakening.
This correlates well with the pressure charts which continue to suggest a changeable week ahead with further low pressure systems moving in from off the North Atlantic:
Friday in particular is shaping up to be a notably cool and windy day with persistent rain for the east and this is something that we are keeping a close eye on.
It's not all bad news, however, as there will be some transient ridges of high pressure moving through to bring some drier and brighter interludes, with Monday and Wednesday looking like being the best days of the week if more settled conditions are your preference:
There remains little sign of a return to the heat that we saw at the end of June but the numerical model output is continuing to suggest an improvement next weekend with pressure rising across the country. Here's the 06z GFS ► output:
The overnight ECMWF ► was also thinking along similar lines:
So more changeable conditions to come this week, although rainfall amounts in the south look limited once again, and then signs of more settled weather taking over by next weekend as the jet stream relents somewhat.
