The Difference Between Warm And HotAdded : Sunday at 14:30 With all the talk of heatwaves, some of you probably woke up this morning expecting another hot and sultry day but instead found cloudy skies and a cool north-easterly breeze. The visible satellite picture from this morning tells the story:
Misty low cloud spread in from the North Sea overnight across much of the Midlands, central and southern England on a north-easterly breeze which developed as high pressure built to the northeast:
This high doesn't go anywhere far over the next few days but with low pressure encroaching from the south so we can expect some subtle changes which will have a knock-on effect on maximum temperatures.
Here is the forecast temperature chart for this afternoon from the high resolution Arome model:
You can see how the highest temperatures can be found towards southeast England where the sun has been out longer, but for parts of the Midlands and around The Wash it is cooler with the cloud taking longer to burn off here and due to that north-easterly breeze.
For tomorrow, the Arome model is showing a cooler day for central and south-eastern regions:
The reason for this is not so much the wind, but that the model is showing thundery showers pushing up from the southeast during the day:
However, if these storms and showers don't develop, then it will be sunnier and hotter.
This goes to show the different variables that meteorologists will be dealing with over the next few days. By Tuesday we are expecting winds to go more south of east which will draw some hotter air in from the near continent, as reflected in Tuesday afternoon's forecast temperatures:
Some impressive contrasts showing with 35°C in he southeast, 25°C across the Midlands but only 15°C in the far north where residents will be wondering what all the fuss about a heatwave is about.
