Wiping Down The KeyboardAdded : Friday at 12:50 If you've ever wondered what a meteorologist does all day then wonder no more...
Every morning meteorologists around the world trundle into the office and the first thing we always do is check the overnight fax charts. Obviously, they don't come through on a fax these days, but there were days when the fax machine would have three feet of paper spewing out of it onto the floor with the overnight model output.
Once this is complete and the coffee machine is bubbling away we look at various other models to see the overall scenario and confidence in the forecast for the next few days. These include the GFS, ECMWF ► and DWD ICON models.
Once that is done and the coffee is in the mug, we then compile the forecasts for the next few days.
Later in the morning, the 6z GFS ► comes through. We tend to glance at it late morning and then.... and then... get this!
The next ten minutes is spent clearing up the tea we have managed to cover the monitor with!
We mentioned earlier in the week how the GFS ► and other models are trying to resolve the Ural high breaking down. There seems to be some agreement on this happening as high pressure develops to the Northeast and allowing colder air to flood in from the North and Northeast.
The 6z GFS ► is probably a cold outlier, but we will have to wait for the ensembles to come through later to find that out. But you won't see model runs like that very often. Either the GFS ► is picking up on how the block resolves or it's gone off on one.
Regardless of this, model output at the moment is something meteorologists are enjoying and at least these days we don't have to rummage through the cupboard to find a new fax roll to put in the machine to see the T+144 output.
