Northern Blocking, Dogs and Bones...
Added : Wednesday at 14:20
By now, you are probably bored of us talking about Northern Blocking, but not as half as we are bored having to talk about it. But the overall pattern once again looks like returning. You see, Northern Blocking is like the herpes of the meteorological world. You think it's gone and then it rears up once again.
The Azores high is doing what it should do at this time of the year in the way it sends ridge extensions Northeast :-
It's this feature which tends to bring us the warmth at this time of the year, but with Northern Blocking the ridge extends too far and to the North of the UK :-
This in turn allows low pressure to sit further South and we draw in cooler air from the Northeast.
You can see how this pattern develops next week and then later next week the GFS ► throwing another ridge to the North and the pattern repeats :-
The blessing is that this didn't happen in the Winter months, otherwise some much colder air would have developed. But at this time of the year it's just cool enough to be a bit of a nagging wind.
All in all, annoying. But that's the weather for you.
