Storm DarraghAdded : Thursday at 13:30 We end the working week with Storm Darragh moving in from the Atlantic and we did mention earlier this week that this was the low pressure system we were keeping a close eye on.
At the momen Storm Darragh is developing out in the mid Atlantic and you can see it to the East of Newfoundland :-
Into tomorrow afternoon and the system moves in across Ireland. Should also be noted that the GFS ► handled the system best out of the global models and kept Darragh to the North.
Storm Darragh brings a multitude of things we are keeping an eye on. First of all it's the heavy rain from the system which will move East across the UK and this will fall on already saturated soil due to the recent rainfall.
The second is the strong winds from the system which will be on the rear of the system :-
This is important, as you may initially think Darragh was a bit wet and windy, but the main winds come in after the centre has passed across your location. Some very strong winds across Western areas later on Friday and these move East into the Irish Sea and Wales early Saturday :-
Also of note is the snow on the Northern edge of the system across Southern Uplands, Cumbria and the Scottish Mountains with heavy snow and drifting in the strong winds across higher routes.
Still some uncertainty over the position of Storm Darragh on Saturday with most models further East than the GFS ► :-
The ECMWF ► also nudging Darragh a little further East with some very strong winds across Northeast and Eastern areas of England on Saturday :-
We are closely monitoring this period as strong North or Northeast winds can be more damaging than Southwesterly winds due to the fact that our prevailing winds are from the Southwest. Also, given the rainfall over the last few days, any tidal rivers could see tidal locking develop if Storm Darragh does move further East in line with the ECMWF.
So, an active system with plenty going on in terms of the weather to end the week and start the weekend.
