The drought worries continue to mount across England and Wales with no sign of any meaningful rain arriving during the next week or so. This comes on top of another impending spell of hot weather, in stark contrast to the north and west of Scotland where further spells of rain can be expected at times along with much cooler conditions.
Starting with the northwest, and for many parts of Scotland, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland there will be a fair amount of cloud around today with spells of rain. These will be heaviest and most persistent over western hills and mountains with the rain slowly edging a little further southeast during the course of the day. Temperatures here will be rather subdued as a result with maximums of 15°C to 19°C, and it will feel cooler still in the brisk wind.
Meanwhile, for many parts of England and Wales it will be another largely fine and sunny day and, although some cloud will bubble up bringing the odd shower, most places will remain dry. Some sunshine will also be found across southern and eastern Ireland and parts of southern Scotland, although cloud will tend to increase here later. In the sunshine it will become warm or very warm, with temperatures of 24°C to 28°C quite widely, although coastal sea breezes will bring some relief.
Tonight brings more of the same with further spells of rain affecting the north and west of Scotland accompanied by brisk winds, although some clearer conditions will move into the far northwest. It remains fine and warm across much of England and Wales taking us into a hot day tomorrow with temperatures towards the south reaching 30°C or 31°C. For many parts of Northern Ireland along with central and southern Scotland it will once again be a very different story with cloudy skies and further spells of rain holding temperatures back.
